Photography Exam Preparation
Introduction
For the examination, I decided to choose the topic of Low Light because it is aesthetically pleasing and intrigues me in the mood it alludes within its dark colour scheme. Similarly, the photographers I've researched have also enabled a further understanding of the components incorporated into this topic. For example, the work of Todd Hido explores the concepts of the night mysteries and capturing the angles and depth of it all. Despite the series being produced decades ago they still effectively convey a timeless ability to resonate with the viewer and portray clear notions of this component. There are never any people in his shots however there is an implied human presence which I like as he creates a quiet yet full of life setting. Similarly so with the work of Effie Paleologou who depicts the art of being able to work wherever he is given and exemplifies limitless possibilities in taking photographs. He additionally presents ideas of uneasy imagery by the 'nocturnal city' as he describes.Low light photographs are images that are captured in environments or situations where the available light is limited. This can include indoor or outdoor settings with dim lighting, such as at night or during sunset, as well as in locations with natural light sources that are obstructed or diffused.
Low light photography can present a number of challenges for photographers, as the lack of available light can result in images that are grainy, blurry, or poorly exposed. However, low light photography can also create dramatic and atmospheric effects, highlighting shadows, silhouettes, and other visual elements that may not be apparent in brighter conditions.
To capture high-quality low light photographs, photographers may use techniques such as longer exposure times, higher ISO settings, and the use of additional lighting sources such as flash or studio lighting. They may also edit the images in post-processing software to adjust the brightness, contrast, and color balance.
Overall, low light photographs can be a powerful and evocative way to capture the mood and atmosphere of a particular environment or subject which contributes to the reason I chose this topic.

Todd Hido
Todd Hido is well known for his eerie atmosphere of street photography and the darkness concept which he develops and evaluates within his work. My initial reaction to his work is that it is very intriguing and exerts a sense o suspense and mystery lurking within: I would like to create my piece similar to this, using it as a sense of inspiration. Hidos photgraphs display a raw sense of documention, capturing whats masked in the night. His work bases on nocturnal photography which instigates exploration and an element of curiousity.
This is my personal favourite of Todd Hidos' because of the aspect of colour; my first impressions were that it was shot from a lower angle and the distortion of the artificial light. Faint reflections on what appears to be the back of a car window presents a sense of depth and complexity. The authenticity is very distinct as it is illustrated in a reality aspect and from a documentation perspective.

Effie Paleologou
Palegulous work and inclusion of such a vast and complex colour scheme links to exciting scenery and a utopian mood. This gives the impression of freedom within the photographs and the infinite photography possibilities . The enablement of expression within this art adds a feeling of release. This style of photography creates an aspect of the range available in photography. This collection evokes a mysterious and fragmented cityscape of two places – London and Athens – both of which artist Effie Paleologou has come to regard as almost home. Working soley at night, when identities become blurred and disguised, Paleologou conjures a newfound aspect of the unknnown that she has become all the more attached to. Her images exemplify an alternate reality. She gravitates more towards train stations, hotels, carparks, seaports and airports, sites in which encounters, departures, disappearances, and endings unfold mysteriously. Shadows and artificial light are a key concept explored.
In school response
These are some photographs I took during school, exploring different notions of scenery and enhancing the natural light. I canvased several areas to achieve this low light genre
Process of editing
I adjusted the colours and shadows to enhance the depth of this photograph, i tried to achieve excellent job with the color edits on my landscape photos. However, I can see how I might have taken too many photos of similar landscapes, which made my collection feel repetitive. For future projects, I'll try to capture a wider variety of landscapes to keep things fresh and interesting. Overall, though I like this collection of photographs as they are very calming.
Based on my adjustment ms , I think I did a great job with the saturation edits on my photos. By increasing the saturation, I was able to make the colors in my photos look more vibrant and eye-catching. This is a great way to make my photos stand out and grab people's attention. Im proud of my final outcome.
This is my personal favourite photograph because it is very similar to the work of Effie Paleologu and his series which is where I received inspiration from. I explored different colours and edited it to emphasise the utopian and sense of timelessness. Additionally, these images really reflect the topic of low light and its variation. At first the photographs were mundane and lacklustre however I edited using Photos and altered the colour and light settings, enhancing the brightness and vibrancy. This acted as a big improvement and adjustment to the aesthetic. I would refer to this as both a naturalistic and abstract image. The street light and shapes of the houses allude further depth within. I captured the play of light through waiting for the sunlight to go however it differs in a way from real life with its fullness of life. This affects the way its portrayed because it appears as more astounding. The space dynamic here is explored well due to the distance from the camera to the landscape; emphasising the extent. In future, I would stand closer to the subject and I wou;d experiment different angles.
More experimentation
For my homework, I decided to manufacture a mood that links closely to my topic of low light and I successfully used the natural lights and tried different angles. I wanted to highlight the colours of the sky and elevate the theme.

The shadows that I was able to create using artificial light were rich and deep, which helped to create a sense of depth and dimensionality in my photos. By carefully positioning my lights and adjusting their intensity, I was able to create shadows that were both dramatic and subtle, depending on what was needed for each shot. In some cases, I used shadows to create a sense of mystery or intrigue, while in other cases, I used them to highlight specific features of my subjects. Third Response
For these photographs, I decided to experiment and take photographs manipulating the sunlight in my house and trial this technique of incorparating shadows into my work. I would say in some aspects such as the framing and focus it went successfully, however the subject placement and the focal point couldve been altered to something more signifanct as this induces a mundane ideal.

Fifth Response
For this project, I ventured out of my standard comfort zone in the photograph and branched out into this new style, where I zoomed my focus onto the mood and elements elevated within the piece.I think it epitomises a concept of modernity and limitlessly photographing sceneries. I chose to increase the colour and brightness of these images, enabling emphasis on the saturation and the reflection of the lights. I enjoyed this process and I think that it creates imagery of positivity and freedom in a sense. I edited it in order to reach the full potential of its light intensity and vibrancy.
This one is my personal favourite due to many of its aspects ; for example, the manipulation of the street light through the camera and the effect created. The colours in the background induce further illumination onto the trees, exemplifying impact.
Exam Plan
My aim for this exam is to create a piece which illustrates the theme of low light and emphasises the composition and depth of the images.I plan to construct a photoshoot, centring around the concept of the moods in the images to be reflected in the piece.
