Here I used Photo Booth to add a filter that alters the photograph. The one I used was called whirlpool and created a twisted effect.
Vivian Maier.
All these photographs have been taken by Vivian Maier. These specific ones are self portraits and as you can see they are all of her reflection. She also does other artworks and takes mainly street photographs. She also did a section on self portraits and they are personally my favourite. I like the creative ways of showing herself. Maier did photographs for the urban human landscape over the course of three decades, in addition to her thousands of other features in her artwork.

Masked Photographs
In todays lesson we created a piece of fabric from old materials to mask ourselves. The aim was to not show your face. I think I did that well and created a mysterious figure behind the plastic. However to improve and develop on this skill even further, I would create a more complex mask/cover.
Omar Victor Diop is an artist in photography and specializes in self portraits and role-play. He uses his art to represent huge people of the past that are overlooked. For example a few of his pieces are a Spanish painter ,soldiers, slaves and prisoners. He does this to bring attention to these figures who are rarely mentioned. He gives a face to the time period and becomes a reinvention of the narrative of black people in the past.He wanted a face for the person he is showing. He tells all his young photographers is to start as soon as possible and use any materials available. In a selfie personally I'd want to become something similar.
Inge Morath and Saul Seinberg
The idea of disguise is central to Steinberg’s art. In the world as he saw it, everyone wears a mask, whether real or metaphorical. People invent personas through makeup, facial expression, hairstyles, and these facades become who they are. “The mask,” Steinberg wrote, “is a protection against revelation.” The Americans was another Steinberg invention. Between 1959 and 1963, he produced paper-bag masks with an array of social species, made famous through the photographs taken by Inge Morath of the artist and his friends wearing the masks in various settings.
Saul Steinberg has a similar ideal to this.

Paper Bag Masks
For this lesson, we got paper bags and created a mask out of them by adding drawings and faces. we then chose a costume to go with it and went to the dark room to take the photograph. We used these materials to disguise ourselves. Additionally to use a similar technique as steinberg and Inge Morath. It created a sense of mystery to the photographs and make it link to self portraits without showing yourself.
I decided to become a mystery character, faceless. I used the paper bag as a canvas and pastels to decorate it. I used the graphite pencil as a sketch to guide the design. Next, I used sharpie to darken the sketch and make it stand out. Lastly I cut off the bag handles and stuck them to the top. I think overall this task went well however next time I would add more detail.
I didn't specifically choose a character to become and simply used the materials provided to create my own character. The materials I used were a paper bag and a lab coat. I used coloured pastels to decorate the paper bag and then a sharpie to outline the edges. `Personally I think the lighting and quality of the photo were good but if we took a few more it would've turned out better. The studio lighting gave a good impact and made the images better than with natural light. Omar diop's. images inspired me to use a character to represent. the mask created an extra sense of abstractness to the image overall I think this project went well and I would like to do something similar again. the second image was one I took of someone else and I used the zoom feature to cover most of the backdrop then later cropped the excess.
Extended Writing Task
In Treacy's photograph, there is a manly figure dressed in protective clothing against rain. For example he is wearing a raincoat and waterproof trousers. This indicates the scene in the series may be wet. This type of image is a self portrait but as it has a sense of mystery it's a masked selfie. The mask also suggests danger due to it being that design. Furthermore In the Diop image, it shows us Omar role playing as a person from the past called Malick Ambar, a slave. His outfit consists if some sort of traditional clothing such as the long white robe with a head piece. This varies from his lower part however, because he's wearing football boots and is kicking a ball. The background is green with intricate borders which creates the evidence to show us that it was taken in a studio. Relating to Treacy's Image it also has a lot of mystery and vagueness just not to the same extent as there is no mask in this image yet he is disguised. Then in the Maier photograph there is a gate in front of her face.
I find it very creative as it includes a lot of detail; it may be an image inside an image with sort of layers. It may have been a type of jail or detaining place because pf the entrapment look. the light source looks as if it's coming from the middle of the room so this is most likely not a studio. Maeir has given us an image with lots of mysterious background that we dont necessarily know about and links to the other two images as its more abstract.
Each photographer has created their own sense of disguise which is why they're all related in a way as they have more similarities than differences. For instance, Diop used disguise in another way to the other pictures because both of them have their faces barely in it. His one is mysterious however not unexpected as his face is there. All of these images are self portraits in their own way. Treacy's way was unconventional in comparison to others
The Maier photograph is the most surprising and is personally my favorite and could influence my work due to the fact it has intricate thought into the way it was taken whereas Treacy's one may not have even been taken in a studio .

Selfie Instruction Collage
www- I scanned the collage with colour and successfully added the images. I also edited the images into a better format before taking a photograph from above. I also stuck the images down and played them flat. I enjoyed the process of putting th collage together.
ebi- in future I'd want to add a better range of photographs and maybe even some more out of the ordinary images. I'd also want to work harder to create better results. Personally, following the instructions was hard for me however the outcome was alright.
In my opinion I do not think this image is a self portrait/ selfie despite the fact there is a self portrait included into it. It leans more towards collages due to the collection of a variety of images. I think every image symbolises a part of me and they all have significance. It is a collage selfie because of the portrayal of these pictures together. The other photographs of objects and places equally representative. I would develop my project by adding more abnormal and unique photographs that have more significance to me and my work. personally this has been one of my favourite pieces and it was overall very interesting to work on.

Shadow Selfies
The top part of the photograph is most highlighted because the photograph uses natural lighting and hats the source where its coming in from. the lower part of the photographs are more dark and have shadows due to the lack of light and the car covering most of it.It looks as a direct sunlight and the photo is overall quite dim because of this.in the further left corner you can't see anything due to all the objects blocking the natural light.
The photographer seems to have an image in his hand as it acts as a frame for the person in the car and creates a box style/cutout.Also the shadows near the bottom of the car shows a manly figure and straight legs. in the background there is also a shed or some sort of room and it has a different texture, , and is full of horizontal lines. We can also see the outline of a hat the photographer is wearing and the line of his arm.
If I could feel the photograph, I think the car would feel like glossy and be a little dusty. the ground would feel like some sort of grainy and have mud like substances. Possibly even rocky. The shed would feel bumpy is a sense but also pattern like.
Most of the shapes are geometric whereas the hat he's wearing has a round top and is organic. his arm also has an organic outline to it. The car is metal and is got sharp edges but also round ones which relate to the other car in the background. The shed has a similar shape to the paper the man is holding.

Narrative Sequencing
WWW- I think this whole piece was an interesting project and was enjoyable . rearranging the order of the photographs was good however specifically building the storyline due to the lack of limitations and how you can create anything out of the template image.
EBI- despite this, to improve I would mention more details in the narrative.

Cyanotype Selfie
This is a negative cyanotype by Anna Atkins. To create this piece, she got a leaf and placed on a piece of chemical ink page before leaving in the sun. After this you rinse it and wait for it to develop and then you should get your result.
Extended Writing Task Assessment
In the photograph by Josephson, There is a car with the photographers hand reaching towards it. In his hand there is a paper with a cut out in the centre showing a dead still hand inside the car. The paper cut out works as if it s a frame and brings more complicity to the image and is a useful technique. The main subject of it is the car due to the fact that the rest of the details in the photograph are unclear as the picture is in black and white. This specific image is a bit puzzling because of the scene it shows. It differs from the second image which has less color and dimmer lighting. I appreciate this image more because you'd have to look a the finer details. The photographer, Woodman, went for an abstract approach and we can see this through the simplistic scenery. The mirror gives us a confusing look to the image because at first glance we cannot tell what the image is. The formal element that strikes me the most in Woodman's picture is the two people shown through the reflection and the effect it has on the picture as a whole.
Josephson's image in some senses relates to Woodman's, suggested through the same strategy of framework. Josephson presents this with the use if the paper in his hand whereas Woodman similarly shows her hand in front of the wood in the mirror. However the photographs overall are different. For example Josephson adds extra details in the background and a mysterious aspect of the car, this contrasts from Woodman who has three plain objects in the image. The composition of her photograph is usual because we can't see the photographer. However both these pieces have complex Fram within frame work within them.
The creation of shadows in both are myserious but especially Josephson's where we can see him taking the photograph towards the bottom part of the image, and its more of an open image. Woodman chiselers the unconventional approach by not including unnecessary parts to the image and kept it simple yet puzzling. I appreciate this image more because it makes the person wonder who is behind both objects and gives an intriguing aspect. I enjoyed the cut out paper idea that Josephson used due to ow it showed the contents of the car and his there is a hand, alive or dead, own there without showing it fully and leaving imaginative features. In Josephson's image the hand behind the frame was surprising and unexpected due to the other parts of the image such as the car.
Personally I think Josephson image gives away too much whereas the Woodman one allows you to be creative and decide what is going on in the image. This is the reason why I prefer this image and hope this reflects my work by me using a more simplistic method with hidden details and finer points. Meaning behind the photo.

Cyanotype Task
The cyanotype process is where you select a photograph then change it to black and white before creating it as a negative. After this, you soak it into acetate and add your materials. They create texture and can imprint onto the image. It is then left in the sun and eventually gets rinsed off to see the end product and develop it.
My image differs from the one I researched about due to the negative aspect and the fact that it is a self portrait. Personally I think I could've placed my materials better on my picture for an improved outcome, however I still like it.
If we recreated this process I would be made the image I chose more personal by showing myself more.

Francesca Woodman. (April 3, 1958 – January 19, 1981) was an American photographer best known for her black and white pictures featuring either herself or female models.
Many of her photographs show women, naked or clothed, blurred ), merging with their surroundings, or whose faces are obscured. Her work continues to be the subject of much positive critical attention, years after her death at the age of 22, in 1981. Her style of art is unique.
Although Woodman used different cameras and film formats during her career, most of her photographs were taken with medium format cameras producing 2-1/4 by 2-1/4 inch (6x6 cm) square negatives.Woodman created at least 10,000 negatives, which her parents now keep. Woodman's estate, which is managed by Woodman's parents, consists of over 800 prints, of which only around 120 images had been published or exhibited as of 2006. Most of Woodman's prints are 8 by 10 inches (20 by 25 cm) or smaller, which "works to produce an intimate experience between viewer and photograph".
Many of Woodman's images are untitled and are known only by a location and date. She often took photographs indoors, finding abandoned and derelict spaces in which to create her photographic tableaux.
At RISD, Woodman borrowed a video camera and created videotapes related to her photographs in which she "methodically whitewashes her own naked body, for instance, or compares her torso to images of classical statuary."] Some of these videos were displayed at the Helsinki City Art Museum in Finland and the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation in Miami in 2005 the Tate Modern in London in 2007–2008; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2011 (in an exhibition which will travel to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in 2012). In the 2011–2012 exhibitions, the selected video works, each 23 seconds to 3 minutes 15 seconds in length, were called sculpture, mask and others. The technique she uses receives a lot of critique due to its orignality and creative aspects however it attracts attention for this exact reason

These two images by her strike me as the most interesting due to the mysterious effect it has and the puzzling idea it creates where you cant tell what is going on. The black and white filter adds more. To make this image, Francesca added two white cloths to the background
